When it comes to creating your dream home, it’s rare you’ll find a house that is already perfect for you. Unless you have braved the task of building your own home from scratch, your new house will probably have to undergo some renovations before it can become your home.
When you do eventually take the dive, the results can be breath-taking. You can watch a house that once felt old, small and cramped turn into a beautiful, modern open space just by updating the interior – be that completely knocking a wall down or simply redecorating more to your taste. You also have the added benefit of an increased property value, should you decide to relocate at a later stage.
A beautiful example of a renovation done right is the home of Natalie Moore Stormark. Natalie took a house that was built in 1979, and gave it a total makeover to create her dream home.
Before
The interior hadn’t been updated at all since it was built, meaning 70’s style woodwork dominated the house. The 5m high ceiling was not being used to its fullest, as closed walls hid the big open space.
“It gave you this old cabin feeling,” says Natalie. “But it was clear to us by first sight, that this house had a lot of potential.”
Within 6 months of buying the house, they had fixed absolutely everything from plumbing to the floors and ceiling – and everything in between. Not only did they do it all by themselves, they did it whilst juggling a 2 year old, a newly born, 2 dogs and 1 horse!
After
Using magazines and Instagram for inspiration throughout the project, Natalie had a desire to keep things simple, bright and open in her home as a result of her long-term OCD. She loved to browse all kinds of interior shops for a clear idea of what to include in her own design.
She wanted to ensure her own personality showed throughout her home using paint, spray colours and fabrics to change up the classic Scandinavian style you’ll see in the Como Coffee Table and Dt20 Dining Table.
“I would describe our home as being simplistic, modern and absolutely practical,” says Natalie. “I am in love with and inspired by Scandinavian style and design.”
Natalie’s favourite room is the 65m2 open-plan living room, kitchen and dining room, in which the family spend most of their time. Having spent over 200 hours tearing down the walls, building the new ceiling and adding over 30 spotlights across the room, it finally came out perfect. The 5m high ceiling now allows for a fantastic feeling of open space.
For anyone looking to renovate their own home, Natalie has some advice:
- Use your creativity!
- Put your personality into it. It shows.
- People always told me not to be afraid to use colours, but for me I found calmness in keeping it simple and in contrast. Do you!
- Dare to think small. Add new pillows, a green plant, a new poster to the wall? Small changes can make a big difference.
- If you are not feeling it, do it over and try something different. Trust your instinct.
